What started as a weekend project to make a set of wooden scales for my Spyderco Manix 2 became a side hustle in early 2020. I hadn’t planned on making sets for sale, but after a few requests in the Reddit group r/knifeclub, decided to take on custom orders.
Originally, sets were all made by hand on a bandsaw, drill press, and bench sander- but after the first batch of orders, I realized that automating hole placement and profiling would improve scale consistency and allow for more complex projects. A local maker helped me set up the first few models and graciously provided use of his CNC laser.
Thanks to the incredible support from the TRM Facebook community through preorder campaigns, I was able to invest in my own CNC laser and router. Bringing the Atom scales to production was a learning experience, involving long hours of machine setup and software adjustments, and keeping up with full time school and work as well. By the end of the year, Atom scales were successfully launched, and since then, I’ve expanded to offer scales for Spyderco, TRM, Vero, Quiet Carry, Civivi, Kizer, and CRKT models..
Along with woodworking, I’m a full-time graduate student, and a registered nurse. Due to scheduling, book spots will be limited.
Thanks for the patience and support!
